Royal Ascot 2014

ascot.jpg

It was Queen Anne who first saw the potential for a racecourse at Ascot whilst out riding in 1711. The first ever race meeting took place that year, with the first four-day meeting in 1768. What is now known as Royal Ascot started to take shape with the Gold Cup in 1807, now Royal Ascot's oldest surviving race. Since 1711, Royal Ascot has been attended by a further eleven monarchs, including Her Majesty The Queen, who has attended every day of Royal Ascot each year since 1945. Other traditions continue too at Royal Ascot, with the singing of old British classics around the Bandstand every evening, while Union Jacks are waved to the accompaniment of a military band. 2014 Ascot takes place between the 17th and 21st of June.
